For brunch, nothing beats The Obstinate Daughter. It’s easily my favorite brunch restaurant in Charleston. The menu leans Italian-inspired with incredible pasta dishes, creative brunch plates, and an outstanding Italian wine list. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over a meal and truly savor the flavors of the Lowcountry.
Of all the beaches around Charleston, Sullivan’s Island is my personal favorite for spending a full day outside. The island has a maritime forest ecosystem, where dense coastal vegetation forms a magical thicket drawing you through, like a portal, to wide sandy beaches. This unique setting gives the shoreline a quieter, more isolated feel compared to other area beaches. After the tide recedes, tidal pools often form along the shore—perfect for wading, exploring, and spotting small marine life.
Another special feature of Sullivan’s Island and this particular area near its northern tip is its network of sandbars. During calm conditions, you can swim or walk out to these stretches of sand and enjoy expansive views of the ocean and shoreline. Some sandbars are close enough for swimmers to reach, while others sit farther offshore and are only accessible by boat. In the summer, the area becomes a favorite spot for parasailers soaring above the water.
If you’re planning a beach day, the town organizes beach access by numbered stations. You can explore the full directory here. A couple of helpful access points include Station 18.5 and Station 22, both of which feature boardwalks that make beach access easier for visitors with strollers, wagons, or mobility challenges. My personal favorite is Station 28.5, which is easy to spot thanks to the quirky UFO sculpture parked near the entrance. From there, it’s only about a 400-foot walk to the sand, and the surrounding sandbars make the area especially fun for exploring.
